2014 Old Vine Zinfandel
Our 2014 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel offers aromas of black and rainbow peppercorns, coriander, over ripe raspberry and pomegranate jam. A cedar perfume note is evident from the 12–14 months aging in American oak. On the palate, this full-bodied wine features black cherry, black pepper and fruity baking cocoa and bittersweet chocolate. Our Zinfandel has a rich, juicy mouthfeel, long-lasting finish and is a perfect expression of an assertive but elegant wine. Enjoy it with Indian-spiced short ribs, meatball and Provolone sub sandwich, or dry-rubbed salmon tacos with tomatillo-avocado slaw.
Sonoma County has a rich winemaking pedigree stretching back to the early 1800’s. With over 60,000 acres of vineyards and over 450 bonded wineries it has assumed a prominent place among California’s premier grape growing regions. The broader Sonoma County AVA includes some 16 sub-appellations each with their own unique microclimates and varietal specialties and Sonoma has become well-known for the diversity of vines that thrive here. The majority of the grapes used in creating our 2014 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel came from Dry Creek Valley, one of the smallest AVAs in size (16 miles long by two miles wide) and a dense concentration of floor, bench land and hillside vineyards. The valley was created by the uplift and subsidence along ancient earthquake faults and the deposit of alluvial material. This soil deposited over thousands of years on the valley floor is primarily gravelly and sandy loam – deep, well drained and fertile dirt that produces flavorful grapes. This very rocky soil helps to stress the vines late in the growing season, concentrating varietal character. Other sub-appellations—namely Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley—play supporting roles here, seamlessly blending to showcase the depth and diversity of this world-class growing region.
Despite yet another year of drought conditions, winegrowers and winemakers were excited by the quality of fruit coming off the vine in 2014. From the dry winter, water restrictions, and unexpected rains during budding, the growing season was filled with unease. Fortunately, grapes developed with great flavors, sugars and acid levels. Typical moderate climate with cool breezes and perfectly timed fog patterns in August allowed Sonoma County fruit to mature evenly. Grapes ripened at an optimal pace, reaching an ideal flavor profile for picking. Our 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel is exceptional an assured yet elegant structure, beautiful color and wonderfully perfumed aromas.
Now in our second century of crafting wine in the Sonoma Valley, we continue to be inspired by my grandfathers’ can-do spirit. In every bottle of Sivas-Sonoma we pay homage to our family founders who paved the way for our generation of winemakers and those to follow.
