Sivas Sonoma Valley California Family Wines
Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel

2013 Old Vine Zinfandel

Our 2013 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel offers aromas of blackberry, dried fig, white pepper and cinnamon bark. Scents of nutmeg and warm spices are woven together with layers of dark black fruit flavors, black strap molasses, Mexican chocolate and pomegranate reduction. A hint of dill and black pepper on the palate are rounded out by bold vanilla from American oak aging. The 12% Petite Sirah adds rich color, depth of flavor and a tannic backbone to create a wine with wonderful structure and intensity. Bright acidity complements this vibrant, medium-plus bodied Zinfandel making it the perfect accompaniment to hearty meals such as beef brisket, lasagna or Cioppino.

Sonoma County has a rich winemaking pedigree stretching back to the early 1800’s. With over 60,000 acres of vineyards and over 450 bonded wineries it has assumed a prominent place among California’s premier grape growing regions. The broader Sonoma County AVA includes some 17 sub-appellations each with their own unique microclimates and varietal specialties. Sonoma County is well-known for the diversity of vines that thrive there. The majority of the grapes used in creating our 2011 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel are from the Sonoma Valley. This area is known for the cooling breezes that come from the north and south, this allows the grapes to develop full flavor maturity over an extended growing season while retaining their all-important natural acidity. Other sub-appellations—namely the Russian River Valley, Knights Valley, and Alexander Valley—play supporting roles here, seamlessly blending to showcase the depth and diversity of this world-class growing region.

2013 was a long and moderate growing season in Sonoma County offering both impressive quality and yield resulting in rich, well-balanced wines. The growing season got off to a fast start in April and was warm enough, and early enough, to bring all grapes to full ripeness without any weather mishaps. While summer offered an abundance of sunshine, temperatures rarely spiked above the mid-90s and, with the exception of a few sprinkles, fall rains never arrived. After a productive 2012, winemakers were pleased with another plentiful year. The 2013 harvest yielded exceptional grapes showing great structure and finesse, with well-developed fruit flavors and balanced acidity. Our 2013 Old Vine Zinfandel is a true standout, displaying elegant structure, beautiful color and wonderfully perfumed aromas.

Now in our second century of crafting wine in the Sonoma Valley, we continue to be inspired by my grandfathers’ can-do spirit. In every bottle of Sivas-Sonoma we pay homage to our family founders who paved the way for our generation of winemakers and those to follow.
